第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)

       阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中选出最佳答案。

A

Recreation(消遣, 娱乐) is for everyone! Too often recreation is considered something that is fine for children, but an indication of unwillingness to work on the part of adults. The recreative experience brings balance into man\"s life, and can be the most dominant social force in modern society.

There are three principal factors in the daily life of every adult: his work, by which he earns his living; his leisure, in which he gains much of his reason for living; and his sleep, through which he recovers to be ready once more for work and leisure. This, of course, is an oversimplification, but it is an indication of the board components (成分) that make it up. Within each of these, however, there are many lesser components.

The work of a large majority of our employed population is relatively dull, and often frustrating (挫败,使感到灰心). In addition, the work of a large percentage of our population is prescribed by an authority who says, “Do this or else.” This means that relatively few people have the opportunity to take choices in their work time. Even though men may not be ruled by machines in their work, they are automatons (机器人) to some degree because prescribed (指示, 规定) methods give them few opportunities to exercise their initiative (主动).

Although there is considerable disagreement among scientists about the activity that takes place during sleep, there seems to be good evidence that man is not conscious of his actions while he is asleep. This means that another segment of daily living is not directed by the individual, except in the degree that it is directed through subconscious or unconscious thought. This, therefore, leaves leisure as that component of daily living in which man has the opportunity to make choices about his activity, since he has the opportunity for choice, man may follow either a constructive or a destructive path. There are many ways in which man shapes his leisure, that is, the time when he is not working or sleeping.

       56. A common misconception with regard to leisure is that _____.

       A. it leads to laziness

       B. it is the most dominant force in modern society   C. it is more essential to children

       D. it is a waste of time for adults

       57. The three principle factors of work, leisure and sleep _____.

       A. are what make up a human being

       B. are the components of life

       C. are the facts of life

       D. are reasons of being

       58. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

       A. Scientists know clearly about the activities that take place when people are sleeping.

       B. Adults who take part in recreative activities are usually not willing to work.

       C. Evidence shows that sleeping is not directed through conscious thought.

       D. Among the three factors in an adult\"s daily life only work allows him to think on his own.

       59. Man\"s leisure is different from work and sleep in that _____.

       A. it allows him the freedom of choice

       B. it refreshes him so that he is ready again for work

       C. it forms the largest portion of his life

       D. it involves subconscious and unconscious thought

B

When I say that Machiavelli is not scientific, I do not mean merely that many of his conclusions are questionable or even superficial(肤浅的).A writer who is not a scientist may sometimes be right where a scientist is mistaken. For example, I should say that Montesquieu comes much closer than Machiavelli to being a political scientist, though he too reaches many questionable and superficial conclusions. Montesquieu expresses opinions about a much wider variety of subjects, and is therefore probably much more often wrong than is Machiavelli. But he does at least attempt to make a systematic study of different types of government; he takes many examples; he aims at an exhaustive(全面的) classification(分类); he is concerned about the methods he uses. We may say that his study is not as systematic as he thought it was, that his examples are not well chosen, that his classification is not exhaustive, and that his ideas about his methods are confused; we may say all this, and yet admit that he aims at making a scientific study of society, that he has some notion of what distinguishes a scientific from an unscientific study. But we cannot say this of Machiavelli. He is not, as Montesquieu is, a very imperfect social and political scientist; he is not a political scientist at all, but a man of genius with considerable practical experience who writes about politics.

       60. In the author\"s opinion, Montesquieu says things that are wrong much more often than Machiavelli does because Machiavelli______.

       A. has the good fortune to be a genius

       B. is more scientific and systematic in his methods

       C. has had practical experience in politics

       D. limits his remarks to a narrower range of topics

       61. Which of the following can be inferred from the last sentence of the passage?

       A. Science cannot improve the work of genius.

       B. Some brilliant writing on politics is unscientific.

       C. Machiavelli is a less perfect social scientist than Montesquieu.

       D. The best substitute(代替) for being scientific in the study of politics is being diligent.

       62. Which of the following is the author NOT willing to say about Machiavelli?

       A. He has some notion of what makes a study unscientific.

       B. He is an original and imaginative thinker.

       C. His understanding of politics is based on experience.

       D. His gifts are far greater than those of ordinary men.

       63. According to the passage, true opinions about politics and society are______.

       A. never easy to gain

       B. gained only by scientific methods

       C. gained by scientists and nonscientists alike

       D. never gained without practical experience

D

Habitual, long-term mobile phone users could soon know if they are a risk if developing cancer.

In what is believed to be a world-first study, human brain cells are being used to test the long-term effects of mobile phone radiation.

The study will use a device to stimulate the effect of long-term exposure of the brain to electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones over a long period.

Testing will be done by researchers at Sydney\"s St Vincent\"s hospital. The project\"s chief investigator(调查者), Peter, a French researcher, said the trial would test whether mobile phone radiation causes cancer in long-term users.

Testing will either prove people’s fear, or show that there is no effect on human brain calls or perhaps that the cells can become immune(免疫的)to electromagnetic radiation through repeated exposure.

During the study, brain cells will be exposed to electromagnetic radiation for an hour each day. Test results are expected in three to six months, with the final report to be published by the end of the year.

The research is unique because most previous studies have focused on short-term exposure on animal cells, which did not help understand the effects of years of regular mobile phone use on human brain cells.

As mobile phones become increasingly popular throughout our society, it is important that we understand as much as possible about the long-term effect of electromagnetic exposure, if any, on human health.

       67. From the text, what might cause mobile phone users to suffer a deadly disease is _____.

       A. that there is some poison in mobile phones.

       B. mobile phone radiation.

       C. the polluted plastic covers of the mobile phones.

       D. some parts of the mobile phones.

       68. Which of the following statements is true according to the text?

       A. The testing is dangerous to people\"s safety.

       B. Such a research is the first study in the world.

       C. People feel afraid when they hear of doing such a test.

       D. The test result will be published in three or six days.

       69. Why will Peter do such an experiment?

       A. He wants to let people know if long-term mobile phone users will have effects on their lives.

       B. He hopes to tell people how to use mobile phone better.

       C. He wants to let people learn how to repair mobile phones.

       D. He wishes to tell people how to pick mobile phones.

       70. The test is mainly _____.

       A. about how to use mobile phones safely.

       B. about how to protect mobile phones carefully.

       C. to warn people of possible harm if they use mobile phones for a long time.

       D. to tell people that some scientists will do a test about long-term mobile phone users and their health.

E

Some scientists say that animals in the ocean are increasingly threatened by noise pollution caused by human beings. The noise that affects sea creatures comes from a number of human activities. It is caused mainly by industrial underwater explosions, ocean drilling, and ship engines. Such noises are added to natural sounds. These sounds include the breaking of ice field, underwater earthquakes, and sounds made by animals themselves.

Decibels measured in water are different from those measured on land. A noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land causes pain to human ears. In water, a decibel level of one hundred and ninety-five would have the same effect. Some scientists have proposed setting a noise limit of one hundred and twenty decibels in oceans. They have observed that noises at that level can frighten and confuse whales.

A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that louder noises can seriously injure some animals. The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. This seriously affected the whale\"s ability to exchange information and find their way. Some of the whales even died. The explosions had caused their ears to bleed and become infected.

Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds object to a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research.

Scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. However, many scientists suspect that noise is a greater danger than they believed. They want to prevent noises from farming creatures in the ocean.

       71. According to the passage, which of the following is increasingly dangerous to sea creatures?

       A.The man-made noise.

       B.The noises made by themselves.

       C.The sound of earthquakes.

       D.The sound of the ice-breaking.

       72. Which of the following is discussed in the third paragraph?

A.Different places with different types of noise.

B.The very human ears sensitive to all types of noises.

C.The same noise measure differently on land and in the ocean.

D.The ocean animal\"s reaction to noises.

       73. As to the influence of noises on whales, which of the following statements is true?

       A.They are deaf to noises.

B.Noises at a certain level may hurt them.

C.They are easily confused by noises.

D.Noises will limit their ability to reproduce.

       74. We can know from the passage that many scientists think that the noise limit of one hundred twenty decibels would____.

A.prevent them from doing their research work

B.benefit them a lot in their research work

       C.do good to their health

       D.increase the industrial output

       75. According to the passage, what will scientists most probably do in the future?

A.They will try their best to decrease noise.

B.They will work hard to cut down noise pollution.

C.They will study the effect of different noises.

D.They will protect animals from harmful noises.
