If you ask some people, “How did you learn English so well?” You may get a surprising answer, “In my sleep!”

These are people who have taken part in one of the recent experiments to test "Learn-While-Sleep "methods, which are now being tried in several countries, and with several subjects, of which English is only one.

Specialists say that this "sleepstudy" method speeds language learning greatly. They say the average person can learn two or three times as much during sleep as in the same period during the day, and does not affect his rest in any way. A word of warning, however, sleep-teaching will only strengthen in your mind what you have studied already while you are awake.

In an experiment, lessons were broadcast over the radio. Each lesson lasted twelve hours from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. The first three hours of English grammar and vocabulary were given with the studenst awake. At 11 p.m. a lullaby was broadcast to send the students to sleep and for the next three hours the radio whispered the lesson again into his sleeping ears. At 2 a.m. a sharp noise was sent over the radio to wake the sleeping students up for a few minutes to review the lesson. The soft songs sent him back to rest again while the radio went on. At 5 a.m. his sleep ended and he had to go through the lesson again for three hours before breakfast.

Two factors weigh heavily against the effectiveness of scientific research in industry. One is the general atmosphere of secrecy in which it is carried out, the other the lack of freedom of the individual research worker. In so far as any inquiry(调查研究)is a secret one, it naturally limits all those engaged in carrying it out from effective contact with their fellow scientists either in other countries or in universities or even, often enough, in other departments of the same firm. The degree of secrecy naturally varies considerably. Some of the bigger firms are engaged in researches, which are of such general and fundamental nature that it is a positive advantage to them not to keep them secret. Yet a great many processes depending on such research are sought for with complete secrecy until the stage at which patents(专利)can be taken out. Even more processes are never patented at all but kept as secrecy processes. This applies particularly to chemical industries, where chance discoveries play a much larger part than they do in physical and mechanical industries. Sometimes the secrecy goes to such an extent that the whole nature of the research can\"t be mentioned. Many firms, for instance, have great difficulty in obtaining technical or scientific books from libraries because they are unwilling to have their names entered as having taken out such a book, for fear that the agents(情报人员)of other firms should be able to trace(跟踪、追查)the kind of research they are likely to be undertaking.

  67. Fear of industrial espionage(间谍)________.

  A. leads to lack of freedom in scientific research

  B. especially applies to scientific research of a general and fundamental nature

  C. can lead to secrecy in scientific research

  D. creates an atmosphere of distrust in business

  68. Which of these statements is true?

  A. Some kinds of scientific research are more secret than others.

  B. All kinds of scientific research are top secret.

  C. Firms never tell anyone anything about their scientific research.

  D. Scientific research workers never speak to each other.

  69. Firms want to be sure ________.

  A. they limit all those engaged in carrying out scientific research

  B. that large companies can’t find out about their scientific research

  C. they are working in an atmosphere of complete secrecy

  D. they won the rights to intellectual of property(知识产权)before they announce their what are doing

  70. The possibility of making discoveries by accident ________.

  A. make it difficult to obtain scientific books from libraries

  B. encourages competition form other agents

  C. increases the need for secrecy

  D. means that every discovery has to be patented

E

Rocket engines that burn chemical fuel have carried man to the moon. But such engines will not carry him to the nearest star. The power and burning time of a chemical rocket engine is too limited. It is not practical to build one capable of carrying the huge load of fuel and oxidizer(氧化剂) that would be needed for a long trip into outer space.

For a deep space mission, a rocket engine would have to operate much longer and produce much more power than the present engines. The nuclear rocket engines being tested will serve better than the chemical rocket engines. They produce more power from each pound of fuel than chemical engines and they will operate longer. But space scientists are thinking even farther ahead. They are planning new rocket engines that will use unusual forms of power such as light energy.

A beam of light is a stream of fast-moving particles called photons(光子).As they move at a speed of 186,000 miles per second, the photons exert a very slight pressure. It is this photon pressure in sunlight that forces the tails of comets (彗星) to stream away from the sun.

If a rocket engine could produce a stream of photons with enough power, it might propel(推进) a spacecraft. Instead of the combustion chamber, nozzle, and fuel tank of today’s rocket engine, the photon rocket engine would have a giant saucer-shaped mirror. The mirror would collect light and reflect it in a focused beam. As the great heat produced would melt any material known today, the mirror would have to be made of some new material.

Space scientists are not yet ready to build a photon rocket engine. But they can guess at how it might look. It could resemble a flashlight flying backward on its own beam of light.

  71. On the whole, the article tells about______.

  A. rocket engines that burn too much chemical fuel

  B. a rocket engine made up of flying flashlights

  C. using an unusual form of energy to travel in space

  D. the materials used to make rocket engines

  72. Scientists are planning new rocket engines that might use______.

  A. chemical fuel

  B. light energy

  C. nuclear energy

  D. nozzles and tanks

  73. A beam of light is a stream of fast-moving particles called_______.

  A. phases                 B. particles

  C. comets                       D. photons

74.The word in paragraph 2 that means a project or task is_____.

  A. nuclear                B. mission

  C. energy                D. rocket

  75. Which statement does this article lead you to believe?

  A. Scientists only want to perfect the engines they have now.

  B. Scientists have no real hope of ever building a photon rocket.

  C. Scientists may even improve on a photon rocket engine someday.

  D. The stars are already too close to us.
