固定在转向机轴下端的齿轮和装配在转向臂的齿轮总称。可将方向盘的旋转动作，转换成拉杆的直线运动。有二种基本的转向齿轮：回旋滚珠式和齿棒小齿轮式。

汽车所使用的动力转向系统，基本上是经修改的手动转向系统，主要的是增加一个助力器(power booster)，以帮助驾驶者。
