Passage One
Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.
This story began about 10 years ago. I was coming out of a very bad marriage.
For seven long years my husband spent his every moment telling me just what was
wrong with me. When I finally asked for a divorce, he answered by telling me that I would never find anyone to love me because I was just so unattractive. This
went on for about two years. One night one of my friends convinced me to go out
with her. We went to a nightclub and that is when I met him.
Clint was playing a game with a girl. I sat in the corner watching him. I didn’t feel that I had whatever it took to get up and mix with others because of my

meet my kids too.
About 3 months later, my divorce was final and Clint sat my boys down and asked them if it was all right with them if he asked me to marry him because he could not imagine life without the three of us anymore. hat many people are receiving hundreds of electronic messages of all kinds each

p them manage their information overload.
Most people are still struggling with incoming paper flow, and find they now h
ave the additional burden of managing electronic information. Information overlo
ad has implications that extend beyond the professional world. The stress and an

Passage Three
Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.
Material culture refers to what can be seen, held, felt, used -what a culture
produces. Examining a culture’s tools and technology can tell us about the group
’s history and way of life. Similarly, research into the material culture of mus
ic can help us to understand the music-culture. The most vivid body of material
culture in it, of course, are musical instruments. We cannot hear for ourselves
the actual sound of any musical performance before the 1870s when the phonograph
(留声机) was invented, so we rely on instruments for important information about
music-cultures in the remote past and their development. Here we have two kinds
of evidence: instruments well preserved and instruments pictured in art. Throug
h the study of instruments, as well as paintings, written documents, and so on,
we can explore the movement of music from the Near East to China over a thousand
years ago, or we can outline the spread of Near Eastern influence to Europe tha
t resulted in the development of most of the instruments in the symphony orchest
ra(交响乐).
Sheet music(乐谱) or printed music, too, is material culture. Scholars once
defined folk music-cultures as those in which people learn and sing music by ear
rather than from print, but research shows mutual influence among oral and writ
ten sources during the past few centuries in Europe, Britain, and America. Print
ed versions limit variety because they tend to standardize any song, yet they st
imulate people to create new and different songs. Besides, the ability to read m
usic notation(乐谱) has a far-reaching effect on musicians and, when it become
s widespread, on the music-culture as a whole.
One more important part of music’s material culture should be singled out: the
influence of the electronic media-radio, record player, tape recorder, televisi
on, and videocassette, with the future promising talking and singing computers a
nd other developments. This is all part of the “information revolution”, a twent
ieth-century phenomenon as important as the industrial revolution was in the nin
eteenth. These electronic media are not just limited to modern nations; they hav
e affected music-cultures all over the globe.
31. Research into the material culture of a nation is of great importance
because ____.
A) it helps produce new cultural tools and technology
B) it can reflect the development of the nation
C) it helps understand the nation’s past and present
D) it can demonstrate the nation’s civilization
32. It can be learned from this passage that ____.
A) the existence of the symphony was attributed to the spread of Near Eastern and
Chinese music
B) Near Eastern music had an influence on the development of the instruments in t
he symphony orchestra
C) the development of the symphony shows the mutual influence of Eastern and West
ern music
D) the musical instruments in the symphony orchestra were developed on the basis
of Near Eastern music
33. According to the author, music notation is important because____.
A) it has a great effect on the music-culture as more and more people are able to
read it
B) it tends to standardize folk songs when it is used by folk musicians
C) it is the printed version of standardized folk music
D) it encourages people to popularize printed versions of songs
34. It can be concluded from the passage that the introduction of electro
nic media into the world of music ____.
A) has brought about an information revolution
B) has speeded up the appearance of a new generation of computers
C) has given rise to new forms of music culture
D) has led to the transformation of traditional musical instruments
35. Which of the following best summarizes the main idea of the passage?
A) Musical instruments developed through the years will sooner or later be replac
ed by computers.
B) Music cannot be passed on to future generations unless it is recorded.
C) Folk songs cannot be spread far unless they are printed on music sheets.
D) The development of music culture is highly dependent on its material aspect.
Passage Four
Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.
You’re late for a job interview when traffic slows to a crawl. At the supermarket, a customer wheeling a full cart cuts ahead of you in the check-out line. Yo
u spend months on a make-it or break-it project, and your lazy colleague lands t
he promotion.
Feel that burn? Before you explode with rage or fly into a fury, take a deep b
reath and remember this: Anger hurts. Study after study has found that high leve

scores were three times more likely to develop heart disease than their calmer c
ompanions, a Harvard School of Public Health study found. And in women, argument
s with spouses raise hormone levels and lower immunity-a real problem, since low
er immune response may increase women’s risk of cancer.
It doesn’t seem to matter whether you release the anger or hold it in, experts
say. The effects on your health are the same. “Anger is anger,” says Redford Wi
lliams, M.D), director of the Behavioral Medicine Research Center at Duke Univer
sity Medical Center and co-author of the book Life Skills. “Both are harmful to
health.”
The good news is, it is possible to control your anger. “By evaluating it and

’s what’s nice about us humans: We can always do something or not do something t
o change our behavior.”
36. From the passage we learn that____.
A) irritable people are more likely to suffer from some diseases than cheerful on
es
B) high levels of anger and hostility are caused by poor immune responses
C) men suffer more from high levels of anger and hostility than women
D) high levels of anger and hostility will inevitably result in heart disease, ob
esity and cancer
37. By saying “Anger is anger”, Redford Williams means that____.
A) anger is inevitable in life
B) one should hold in anger instead of releasing it for the sake of health
C) one should release anger instead of holding it in for the sake of health
D) anger does harm regardless of its different forms of expressions
38. “Talk yourself out of it” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning
to ____.
A) control your anger by talking to yourself
B) talking helps you hold in your anger
C) persuade yourself not to get anger
D) release your anger by talking it out
39. It can be inferred from the passage that ____.
A) fresh air helps one control his feeling
B) higher hormone levels are unfavorable to the health of females
C) humans can always control their feelings by instinct
D) the angrier one is, the fatter one will be
40. What is the best title for the passage?

Short Answer Questions(15 minutes)
Directions: In this part there is a short passage with five questions or incomplete statements. Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.
Old age and seniority alone do not command authority among the British: in fact modern life has been developing so fast that old people often appear tiresome and out of date. Thus, “We need some young blood” is often heard in the organizations where the energy and modern methods of younger men are felt to be more likely to succeed than the long but partly irrelevant experience of older ones. The wisest of the older generation realize this. They either make an effort to remain young in heart and keep pace with the time, or else they let younger men take their place.
It follows that mature British have no desire to grow old or to look older than they are. Women especially, for reasons of sexual attraction, long to “stay young”, and there is no greater compliment to a mature woman than to be told “How young you look!” On the other hand, if a woman’s hairstyle, make-up and clothes reveal an obvious effort to look artificially young, she is said to “look common”, and is regarded with disapproval.
Questions:
S1. What can be the best title of this selection?
____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____
S2. What do the wisest of the older generation do to keep pace with the times ac
cording to the selection?

S3. Why do British women, especially, long to stay young?

Compound Dictation
It’s hardly possible not to read advertisements these days. And what fun they of
ten are, too! Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like wit
hout advertisements. Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or reading railway b
y-laws while waiting for a train? Would you like to read only closely- printed c
olumns of news in your daily paper? A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such a
difference to a dull wall or a newspaper full of the daily ration of disasters.
We must not forget, either, that advertising makes a positive contribution to ou
r pockets. Newspapers, commercial radio and television companies couldn’t surviv
e without this source or revenue. The fact that we pay so little for our daily p
aper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programs is due entirely to the money spent
by advertisers. Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its ful
l price!
Another thing we mustn’t forget is the small “ads” which are in virtually every
newspaper and magazine.. What a tremendously useful service they perform for the
community! Just about anything can be accomplished through these columns. For i
nstance, you can find a job, or sell a house, announce a birth, marriage or deat

or offers such a deep insight into human nature. It’s the best advertisement fo
r advertising there is!

Private Cars in China
It’s known that private cars have been on the increase in the Chinese households. However, there has been much controversy as to whether it is advantageous to own a private car.
Those who are for the possession of private cars argue that they can bring convenience and mobility to the owners, enabling them to move around freely. On the other hand, the growth of automobile industry will certainly contribute greatly to the development of other industries, such as iron and steel production, technological innovation and application.
However, some people hold that the possession of private cars will give rise to a series of problems. For instance, as more and more cars are used, the emission from their exhausted pipes will make the environmental pollution of urban areas all the more worse. And as more and more people drive cars, traffic in cities will become increasingly heavier with frequent jams, Besides, parking is also a big problem since there isn’t enough space for so many private cars .
In conclusion, both sides are justified in their arguments for or against the possession of private cars. However, I won’t hesitate a moment to buy a car if I have the means to afford one, despite all the problems of owning a private car.
