Education: Examination-Oriented or Quality-Oriented
1) Present situation
2) An alternative: Quality-Oriented
3) My comment
(启) From primary school to college, students, teachers, parents all are struggling for high scores. (承1) It goes without saying that the current education is aimed at developing the students" ability to perform well on test. (承2)However, their real abilities are neglected.
(转) Nowadays this examination-oriented education is strongly challenged by quality-oriented education. (承1) On the one hand, the alternative will focus on the students" ability and quality as a whole. As a result, the students can fully develop their potential. (承2) On the other hand, the exam results will no longer play a key role in evaluating the academic achievements a student gains in school. Meanwhile, teachers do not have to only teach students the skills to do examinations. (合) There is no denying that all the parties concerned will benefit from the quality-oriented education.
(合) Personally, I firmly believe in the magic force of the new education policy, (承) and look forward to enjoying the great benefits the program will bring out. (合)In this way, the quality of our education will be greatly improved.

Professional Sportsmen
1. 近年来,职业体育运动越来越流行。
2. 有些人认为职业运动员是以挣钱为目的。
3. 我的不同观点。
In recent years, professional sports have been very popular everywhere in the world. In Europe, the most popular one is soccer, and in the United States, football, basketball and baseball are the most attractive ones. Thus, there have developed a group of athletes known as professional sportsmen.
However, some people argue that professional sportsmen only aim at making money, for they demand very high salaries in their performance. Some professional sportsmen are paid salaries that run into millions of dollars. Some even make additional money by appearing in advertisements or promoting merchandise bearing their names. They seem to be more interested in making money than playing the game.
As far as I am concerned, this practice is harmful to the sportsmen and to the society as well. For one thing, they have to spend much time on the social activities other than training; therefore their career will be ruined. For another, the people want to see them performing well in sports instead of their faces in advertisements.

Can Computers Replace Teachers in English Teaching?
1. 计算机及多媒体技术在大学英语课堂上使用越来越广泛。
2. 老师和计算机相比的好处。
3. 计算机是否能在将来取代老师?为什么?
Model Composition
Nowadays computer-aided instruction is getting more and more popular on the campus throughout the world, especially in teaching English. More and more students tend to learn English independently with the help of multimedia learning software. They claim that they have more freedom of learning whatever they like at their own pace, with both ease and care. What"s more, computer-aided instruction is an original way of learning, which can arouse students" interest.
However some people believe that teachers can better help students learn knowledge and acquire skills. They argue that, for one thing, students cannot talk to machines. It goes without saying that to learn English better, students should talk to teachers and get in touch with them. For another, computers cannot supervise students, thus some students spend the precious time not on English, but on net-chatting or browsing porn websites.
As far as I am concerned, computers cannot replace teachers in English teaching because students need to contact human beings, not machines. At the same time, they should try their best to gain more from computer-assisted programs. By combining the two methods, students can learn English better.

On Overseas Study
1. 有人认为出国留学是个人发展的最佳选择;
2. 也有人坚持在国内也能实现自己的理想;
3. 我的看法。
Model Composition
When it comes to the choice of whether to study abroad or at home, different people have different opinions. Some see more advantages to overseas study, while others believe that the disadvantages outweigh its advantages.
With the deepening of reform and opening-up of our country, many people can go abroad for further study. They insist that there are more modern research facilities, world famous professors and excellent environment in some foreign colleges and universities, which lay a perfect foundation for their future development.
However, there are still many people who favor studying at home. They argue that, for one thing, studying abroad is too expensive and therefore doesn"t pay off. For another, there are no language and cultural barriers if they study in our country.
Just as the old saying goes, "Every advantage has its disadvantage," so I believe both opinions are acceptable in some sense. If students have the chances and financial resources, they should seize the opportunity to go abroad and broaden their eyes. On the other hand, if conditions don"t permit, they can pursue their studies at top universities in our country. What counts is not the place where they study, but what they can learn.

My Attitude toward Peer Pressure
1. Peer pressure is common.
2. My own practice.
3. My suggestion.
Peer pressure refers to the pressure that comes from our colleagues or classmates. I always try to take it actively, that is to say, I try my best to change the pressure into a kind of impetus.
As a college student, I have no way to avoid peer pressure. It seems that every other student is working harder and for a longer period. Sometimes I feel they are all more competent than me. What shall I do? My decision is to make best use of this pressure. So under the pressure, I also work harder and longer, and because of my hard work, I have no time to think about the pressure. I"m no longer so troubled by it. Little by little, I make great progress. A sense of confidence is born in me.
So now I"d like to advise all those who are burdened with peer pressure to stop worrying and try to make it your motivating force to achieve your goal. Then we can enjoy the benefits press pressure brings us.

How Can Laid-off Workers Find New Jobs?
1. 很多下岗工人很难找到新的工作。
2. 如何帮助他们。
Model Composition
The market economy has brought China both benefits and headaches, one of which is the problem of finding new jobs for laid-off workers. There is no denying that serious social problems will arise unless this problem is properly solved. As a result, it is essential to explore ways to get laid-off workers back to work.
Serious as the problem seems, we can find some solutions to it. To begin with, priority should be given to the expansion of tertiary industry(第三产业) because tertiary industry can create a great number of positions with few restrictions on age, education, skill, etc. Also, little capital is needed to set up enterprises in this field. In addition, the laid-off workers have to update their skills to meet the demands of the society, just as the old saying goes, "God helps those who help themselves." Last but not least, they should stop relying on the state and throw away any worries about their "face" while doing "low" jobs such as washing dishes at restaurants or sending newspapers to households. Once the habit of dependency is cracked, then the country can make other policy changes aimed at improving their living standards.

Directions:
The following table gives statistics showing the aspects of quality of life in five countries. Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information in the table below.
Country GDP per head (US dollars) Daily calorie supply per head Life expectancy at birth (years) Infant mortality rates (per 1000 live births)
Bangladesh 140 1877 40 132
Bolivia 570 2086 50 124
Egypt 690 2950 56 97
Indonesia 580 2296 51 87
USA 13160 3652 74 12
The table uses four broad economic indicators to show the standard of living in five selected countries, including both the most developed nation in the world and some of the less developed nations. There is no denying the fact that the USA had much higher quality of life than other countries.
As can be clearly seen from the statistics, the USA-one of the richest countries in the world-had the highest GDP and daily calorie intake, the longest life expectancy and the lowest infant mortality rate. The other developing countries had a considerably lower quality of life. Egypt, Indonesia and Bolivia were similar in their range of indicators, with Egypt having the highest quality of life among the three. However, Egypt"s infant mortality rate was slightly higher than Indonesia"s, at 97 deaths per 1000 compared to 87 in Indonesia. Bangladesh had by far the lowest quality of life in all the four indicators. Its GDP was only about one-hundredth that of the USA. The figures in terms of the daily calorie supply per head and life expectancy at birth in Bangladesh are the half of those respectively in USA, and its infant mortality rate was 10 times greater.
In conclusion, it goes without saying that the four developing countries have to develop a lot more before reaching the same level of quality of life as the USA. At the same time, the USA has the responsibility to help the other countries to develop their economies and improve their people"s living standard.

Estimated Earnings in City X
Outline:
1. Earnings and different ages.
2. Earnings and different education levels.
3. Draw your own conclusion.

As is illustrated in this chart, there is a close link between the earnings and ages. On the average, people at the age of 30 get the highest incomes. The incomes of the people, who are about 20 years of ages, are almost at the same level. The earnings of the people from 40 to 60 years old drop sharply. People at the age of 60 can earn only about 1/5 the incomes of the young.
If we take a closer look at the relationship between the earnings and the education levels, we can find that the higher education one gets, the more money one can earn.
From the above analyses, I would say we have to make our greatest efforts to get more education to make more money. Meanwhile, when we are young, we should set aside some money to be used later when we are too old to earn much money.

The Tears of A Bird

1. Describe the cartoon and deduce the purpose of the drawer of the picture;
2. State the harmful effects of the phenomenon;
3. Give suggestions as to how to solve the problem.
Model Composition
As can be clearly seen from the cartoon, a bird is sitting on the top of a huge ax, with tears streaming from its eyes. Because all the trees are cut down, the bird will have no habitat. The cartoon conveys the meaning that it is urgent to preserve the woods for the birds and protect the environment for human beings.
The cutting of trees, as well as the destruction of our environment, may lead to several harms as follows. In the first place, the trees provide us with many vital things we humans need, such as oxygen, food, shelter and so on. The animals, such as the bird in the picture, also need the trees. In the second place, if trees are cut down, then there will be nothing to retain the rain water, thus floods will happen more often in the future. Last but not least, there is only one earth. If the environment is destroyed, then we will have no place to live in.
Since this phenomenon causes so many harmful effects, we have to come up with some measures to deal with it. First of all, the authorities should adopt the policy of "sustainable development", just as our government has been doing. What"s more, every citizen should realize the seriousness of the problem and make concerted efforts to protect our environment.
